LOCATION
It seems unfathomable that such a wild and remote site could even be associated with a city, yet Mashpi lies within the Metropolitan District of Quito, the capital of Ecuador. The lodge perches at 950 metres (3,117 feet) above sea level and the reserve in which it is located ranges in altitude from 500 metres to 1200 metres above sea level. Even our local guests express amazement that such an incredible wilderness lies within the city borders and that it can be reached without complicated logistics.
ARCHITECTURE
- CONSERVATION AND COMFORT
Mashpi Lodge was built with the latest techniques for sustainable construction – like parts preassembled in Quito – and is designed to blend perfectly with its natural environs. It is strikingly-contemporary, featuring modernist design and décor, mixing warm earth tones, steel, stone and glass in salient perspectives: a true cocoon amid the forest.
- OPEN-AIR PANORAMIC TERRACE
On the upper level, a lovely open-air terrace with pergola style roof, seats and tables, provides a space for guests to enjoy splendid views and a place to relax with the sounds of the forest and its inhabitants almost at touching distance.
- OVERVIEW
Mashpi is designed to completely immerse you in the life of the forest, while keeping its creatures safely at bay – a luxury retreat amid the dense forest and stunning mountain views. The rooms are arranged over three floors, all designed with floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall panoramic glass windows, some on two sides, with the forest just a few feet away.
At Mashpi Lodge, we believe in understanding your passions, interests and abilities in order to make your stay as memorable as possible. We therefore don’t have any set programs. We will make suggestions as to the highlights we think you’ll enjoy most, but really, it’s up to you how you spend your time with us. If you have a particular passion for birds, then we can arrange special treks or activities for you… If you want to meditate at a waterfall in the morning, then let us know… Please do get in touch with us in advance so we can best plan your stay together!
The following are outlines of how you might spend your time at the Lodge, exploring its huge reserve of primary forests and energizing waterfalls, and enjoying the unique activities we’ve designed.
We have an expedition leader who each evening will help you to plan your explorations for the next day, as well as a team of natural guides on hand to make the plans reality.
Itineraries
An unexpected oasis of urban comfort for just 47 guests in a truly unique location: a mega-biodiverse private forest reserve located within the Metropolitan District of Quito.
EXPERT TIPS
For security reasons, the doors to the Reserve close at 3 p.m., so keep in mind you won’t be able to enter our facilities after this time. If you’re not sure you can make it, we suggest you consider a stay in Quito before your adventure in Mashpi.
Located in the northwest corner of the Metropolitan District of Quito, the Mashpi Biodiversity Reserve stands out as a unique and extraordinary destination. Encompassing an expansive area of 2800 hectares, this reserve encompasses both cloud forest and rainforest, contributing to the globally-significant Choco biodiversity hotspot. Mashpi serves as the habitat for various wildlife, including pumas, kinkajous, hundreds of amphibian and reptile species, thousands of insect and arachnid species, and over 500 species of birds.
Visitors to Mashpi can indulge in days of exploration, encountering a diverse array of flora and fauna while immersing themselves in the rich ecosystems of the reserve. A highlight not to be missed is the two-kilometer-long aerial tram that gracefully glides visitors through and above the lush rainforest canopy, offering breathtaking views and unparalleled access to the reserve's natural wonders.
Mashpi Lodge
At Mashpi Lodge we are motivated to please your wishes and interests, therefore, we do not have a set program. We'll make suggestions on highlights we think you'll like, but you get to choose how you enjoy your time with us. Here are some examples of how you can make the most of your time at the Lodge.
BELOW IS AN EXAMPLE ITINERARY:
The adventure begins upon arrival at Mashpi Lodge, the estimated time of arrival is at 12:00. In the afternoon you can go out for an activity that could include taking an introductory walk through our magical forest. Afternoon activities begin at 3:00 p.m.
When night comes, a new group of creatures emerge, your guide might point out the frogs (some are transparent!), snakes and tarantulas that are found during a night walk.
The next day could start at sunrise on the panoramic terrace, watching -and hearing- a flock of birds flying around the lodge. After breakfast, you can walk to a waterfall, bathe in the dramatic water jet, and then head to the Hummingbird Garden. Another option is to discover the wonderful butterflies at the Life Center.
After lunch, you can cycle between two points in the forest about 200m apart on the Aerial Bike, followed by reaching and climbing the Observation Tower to enjoy the Reserve in its entirety and watch the sun set behind the mountains and clouds…
For the evening, we have prepared a series of talks: the “Hidden wildlife of Mashpi”, the “Chocó, a biological hotspot” about the formation and diversity of the Chocó, or about our scientific research projects. The talks will be given by one of our naturalists or our resident biologist at 7:30 p.m.
You may want to save the best for the last day; you can explore other trails in the forest, go to a different waterfall or find a corner to contemplate and reflect on your experience.
Note: There is free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, but it has a better connection in public areas.
It is important to know that the maximum allowed arrival time at Mashpi Lodge is until 4:00 p.m
*The transfer from Quito to the lodge departs approximately at 07:30 am from Swissotel, JW Marriott, Hilton and Casa Gangotena. And transfers from the lodge to Quito departs at 12:00 pm arriving to the hotels detailed before at 15:00 pm approximately.
